90’s

If there’s one decade I could take homage from and wear for the rest of my life it would be 90’s off-duty minimalism. As I’ve gotten older I’ve used old photos of my mom as inspiration for my current style: mom jeans, kitten heels, cable-knit sweaters, denim jackets, fleece, basic tees, button-ups… all the things I couldn’t imagine my wardrobe without today. Let us not forget about our dads either, sometimes I’ll sift through my dad’s closet before my mom’s. 90’s menswear is the epitome of comfort, minimalism and “swag”. So take a look in your parents’ closets for oversized crewnecks, button-ups, jackets and tees before heading to your local thrift store!

I look forward to a true minimalist era, a decade where being undone is cool, replacing tired and worn-out fast fashions is the norm and loving yourself for who you are is the standard.

Fall is in Full Swing!

Summer coming to an end is always a tough pill to swallow for me. This year, to ensure a smoother transition, I have enthralled myself in all things fall fashion. When it’s cold, I like to be comfortable. When researching the many trends and must-have’s for this fall season I’ve kept comfort and warm options at the fore-front. I love turtlenecks, I love a wide-leg pant and I always want cozy and warm materials.

  1. Cable Knit/ Turtlenecks

Timeless. You will catch me in cable knit sweaters all fall and winter. Pairs well with denim, trousers and floor length skirts. Check out cable knit vests as well, which compliment button ups and can really tie an outfit together. The Turtleck is especially valuable, especially in a long, fitted variety that can be worn in a plethora of ways. You're able to wear it with denim, a dress, layered underneath something - such a natural outift.

  2. Statement Coats

This is one of my favourites. I will make a case for statement pieces any day of the week, especially statement jackets. Bold, bright colours are the way to go; they allow for a uniqueness that can compliment your personality and help you create more outfits with less in your closet. My statement buys for the season so far have been: a blue leather jacket and a green trench coat.

  3. Trousers

Love love love! Trousers are my go to, they are comfortable, perfect for work and perfect for street style. Check out 'Djerf Avenue' for the perfect pair; they are size inclusive and high quality with a variety of colours. A bit on the expensive side but definitely worth it, I have 3 pairs and have worn them at least 85 times each and they look and feel as though I bought them yesterday. Tailored yet relaxed trousers are the staple you definitely need to get your hands on if you haven’t already.

  4. Cardigans

Cardigans are another timeless classic. This season I’ve opted for colourful, statement cardigans that liven up an outfit. To do this, I’ve raided my Moms closet and found cardigans she wore in the 80’s and 90’s. A lot of the cardigans I've dug up are made of wool and I have sensitive skin, to be able to wear and still be comfortable, I will normally pair with a plain, neutral long sleeve undershirt to prevent the itch. The more colours and patterns the better! Before checking out any stores, I recommend raiding your older family members closets first. If you have no luck, check out Value Village, Goodwill, The Patch or other second-hand, vintage stores in your area!

  5. Upsized Leather Jackets

Leather jackets have been wildly popular the past few seasons, but they’re back and reimagined in upsized proportions and I couldn’t be happier. If you’re like me, baggy is always the move. I like to look good but almost more importantly, I like to be comfortable. That means baggy jackets, baggy pants, oversized shirts and comfortable materials are always at the top of my list. Run to your local vintage and second hand stores to get your hands on some over-sized and longer leather jackets. Think outside the box and opt for colours too!

  6. Button-Ups/ Blouses

Blouses and button ups are a go -to of mine for work and to wear casually. While a universal piece, they are comfortable, stylish and unique. If you, like me, have started working back in the office again and need outfit inspiration; I recommend finding some button ups. I’d start with neutrals (white, black, cream) that you can wear with various statement pieces and layers. As you begin to build your closet, look for patterns, brighter colours and various fits.

  7. Loafers & Doc Martens

I don't have a pair of loafers yet, but I'm on the hunt for some. They're easy to slip on, comfortable and elevate many outfits. Again, check your local second-hand and vintage stores but if you don't have any luck, check out Franco Sarto for an Eco-conscious loafer under $100! I love my Doc's, they're comfortable and have been in style for decades. My only critique would be they take some time to get on and take off. If I'm in a rush, I'm grabbing a different shoe. They come in various styles and colours but my personal favourite is the classic, calf high in black.
